The types of clothing worn by plague doctors in France and Italy during the 17th century where believed to have protected them from airborne diseases of the time. The costume consisted of an long heavy overcoat and a mask with a "bird like beak", along with leather gloves, tall boots, wide-brimmed hat, and an outer garment, cape or poncho.

These plague masks where often filled with various types of herbs and spices, both sweet and strong smelling and many other combinations and concoctions.
